history of books begins with many questions. The number of reliable answers is not sufficient. The original form of the book was immaterial and belonged to the oral TRADITION, so that the book\u2019s deepest root is as old as the man of mastered experience and knowledge. When he decided to effectuate that experience and knowledge into a handicraft, to usher outside his internal world, he stepped into the area of creative power where knowledge and experience were supported by the artistic and aesthetic potential. Numerous cultures have endowed us with books of different content and form whose beauty we still marvel at today. It is usually related to avant-garde movements of the twentieth century, the works of Futurists, Dadaists, Surrealists, to conceptualism (although by its materiality it represents a\u00a0<em>contradictio in adjecto<\/em>\u00a0to dematerialised practices and the rejection of object).<\/p>\n<p>Various modalities and interpretations of literary works and transference of temporal into spatial media, open up space for dialogue exchanges between the literary and the visual, the fictional and real, when visible instruments explain the internal and invisible, and where \u201ethe visible as the house of meaning\u201c enters the field of interpretation.<\/p>\n<p>According to Katherine Hayles,\u00a0<em>Artist\u2019s Book<\/em>\u00a0possesses three characteristics: physical object, textual content and reception, all of them in constant interplay, forming polymorphic shapes and bringing about change in the usual practice of reception, thus creating conditions for new readings of a work. In a work formed in this way text is either not always present or just loosely related to the material form.<\/p>\n<p>With regard to the reception of a literary work, Francis Bacon, a 16th century philosopher, stated that some books could be read from the front, some from the middle and some from the back, thus heralding Paul Val\u00e9ry\u2019s thinking and the unconventional form and structure of the \u201estream of consciousness novel\u201c. Believing that a book can be opened in any place Paul Val\u00e9ry said that \u201ethe vitality of a book did not depend on what came previously, or on a kind of fixed illusion, but on what could be called a singular activity of the textual warp\u201c.<\/p>\n<p>If one was looking for a visual correlative to the \u201cstream of consciousness novel\u201d one could find it in an\u00a0<em>Artist\u2019s Book<\/em>, anti-book, no-book, as named by Ri\u010dard Kostelanec (Richard Kostelanetz). \u201cStream of consciousness novel\u201d deviates from the conventions of traditional novel, uses procedures very like those applied in editing, wordplays, free associations, multiple points of view, and possesses a new structural organisation (James Joyce, William Faulkner, Virginia Woolf).<\/p>\n<p>The transformation of a literary work into a new material equivalent changes the ontological essence of the book, appropriates new forms and modalities, plays with the structure (Russian constructivists), introduces non-conventional elements. The perceptive and experiential sphere of the observer is also changed. A book should be \u201cseen, heard, touched\u201d, smelled. (The work\u00a0<em>Literary Sausage<\/em>\u00a0is filled with a copy of Daily Mail mixed with spices and other ingredients indicated in the recipe for sausages, Dieter Roth, 1961).<\/p>\n<p>The material component is changeable. There are materials from both the artistic and non-artistic scale (such as paper, wood, clay, leather, metal, fabrics, concrete, glass&#8230; \u2013 Anselm Kiefer, Lucas Samaras, G\u00fcnter Ueker, Kiki Smith, Rachel Whiteread and others). The shape and the size vary, but the semantic framework is contextual.\u00a0<em>Artist\u2019s Book<\/em>\u00a0possesses plasticity, exceptional materiality, vibrancy and sensual values (compare the \u201cwild tactility\u201d of Russian futurist books). Interventions and experiments on the material body of the book rely on the techniques of structuring, constructing, cutting out, reconstruction, decomposition, gluing, collaging, colouring, application of graphic techniques and the like.<\/p>\n<p>In mid-twentieth century\u00a0<em>Artist\u2019s Books<\/em>\u00a0entered big museums\u2019 collections (for example, MoMa, Victoria and Albert Museum, Petzi Museum, and many others); they are exhibited at art books fairs and similar events. In this region, there has been an international manifestation\u00a0<em>Punkt\u00a0<\/em>(Nena Skoko, author), or the authored exhibition dedicated to\u00a0<em>Artist\u2019s Book\u00a0<\/em>by Vesna Pavi\u0107evi\u0107 Laki\u0107evi\u0107, to mention only a few.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, there is an interesting phenomenon: museums for one book have been opened, such as the Museum of Innocence in Istanbul, after the novel of the same title by Orhan Pamuk, or the Museum dedicated to Chekhov\u2019s work\u00a0<em>Saghalien Island<\/em>, opened at Saghalien. These institutions materialise the contents of individual books and the Museum of Innocence in Istanbul, for example, contains collections of objects related to the life of the main protagonist.<\/p>\n<p>The destruction of books for religious, political or moral reasons, in extreme intolerance towards the Other and the Different, the burning of books and libraries, stretches from the destruction of Assurbanipal\u2019s (Sardanapalus\u2019s) library, the cutting of the Book of Gospels in 1914 in the church in Nemeniku\u0107e (near Mladenovac, Serbia), the burning of books in Berlin in 1933, the bombing of the National Library in Belgrade in 1941, including other numerous examples of books destruction in the history of humanity. Francois Truffaut\u2019s film\u00a0<em>Fahrenheit 451<\/em>, filmed after the novel by Ray Bradbury, is a powerful metaphor and symbolically speaks about the repression of free thinking in authoritative societies that remove books by fire. One is made up of a specific material from the rich collection of books in the MUSEUM OF BOOKS AND TRAVELS, of the Adligat Association, and its founder, the Lazi\u0107 family, comprising books from other cultures and countries. The second part is a selection of\u00a0<em>Artist\u2019s Books<\/em>\u00a0from the collection of the ZEPTER MUSEUM. Such a concept reveals all the similarities and differences of what one ascribes to a common denominator \u2013 the book. But, there is also a question: what is a book or, what can a book be?<\/p>\n<p>Only a small number of exhibits from the MUSEUM OF BOOKS AND TRAVELS (it should be visited so that one can see how complete, rich and beautiful their collections are) appear in the most diverse forms of books with specific features, emphasised materiality and plasticity, including all the cultural, social and technical processes involved in their making. The materials used, characteristic of a certain region of their origin, are frequently organic, such as palm leaves, animal skin, bones, wood and the like. A special aspect is their smell as an element that helps in detecting the age of a book.<\/p>\n<p>The other entity in this exhibition comprises\u00a0<em>Artist\u2019s Books<\/em>\u00a0from the collection of the ZEPTER MUSEUM by: Dado \u0110uri\u0107, Danica Basta, Gordana Kaljalovi\u0107, Milan Sta\u0161evi\u0107, Milija Ne\u0161i\u0107, Radomir Kne\u017eevi\u0107 Knez, Sa\u0161a Pan\u010di\u0107, Slavoljub Caja Radoj\u010di\u0107, Slobodan Kne\u017eevi\u0107 Abi, \u0160emsa Gavrankapetanovi\u0107, Tomislav Kauzlari\u0107, Vjera Damjanovi\u0107. Within the diverse thematic and contextual definitions and formal features there exists an exchange of dialogue between different poetics, sensibilities, materials and modalities. me\u0111uigri, formiraju polimorfne oblike i dovode do promene ustaljene prakse recepcije, pa time stvaraju uslove za novo \u010ditanje dela. U ovako formiranom delu\u00a0tekst\u00a0nije uvek zastupljen ili je u labavoj vezi prema materijalnom obliku.<\/p>\n<p>U vezi s recepcijom knji\u017eevnog dela, Fransis Bejkon, filozof iz 16. veka, iznosi stav da se neke knjige mogu \u010ditati spreda, neke od sredine, neke otpozadi. Kao da time profetski nagove\u0161tava mi\u0161ljenje Pola Valerija i nekonvencionalnu formu i strukturu romana toka svesti. Smatraju\u0107i da se knjiga mo\u017ee otvoriti bilo gde, Pol Valeri navodi da \u201evitalnost knjige ne zavisi od onog \u0161to prethodi, od neke vrste ve\u0107 stvorene iluzije, ve\u0107 od onog \u0161to bi se moglo nazvati vlastitom aktivno\u0161\u0107u tekstualnog tkanja\u201c.<\/p>\n<p>Ako bi mogao da se na\u0111e vizuelni korelat romanu toka svesti to bi mogla da bude\u00a0<em>knjiga umetnika<\/em>, anti-knjiga ili ne-knjiga kako je imenuje Ri\u010dard Kostelanec. Roman toka svesti odstupa od konvencija tradicionalnog romana, koristi postupke bliske monta\u017ei, igru re\u010di, slobodne asocijacije, vi\u0161estruke ta\u010dke gledi\u0161ta i poseduje novu strukturalnu organizaciju \/D\u017eejms D\u017eojs, Vilijam Fokner, Vird\u017einija Vulf\/.<\/p>\n<p>Transformacija literarnog dela u novi materijalni ekvivalent vodi ka promeni ontolo\u0161ke su\u0161tine knjige, usvajanju novih formi i modaliteta, poigravanje strukturom \/ruski konstruktivisti\/, uvo\u0111enje nekonvencionalnih elemenata. Menja se i pro\u0161iruje perceptivna i do\u017eivljajna sfera posmatra\u010da. Knjigu treba \u201evideti, \u010duti, dodirnuti\u201c, mirisati \/ delo\u00a0<em>Knji\u017eevna kobasica<\/em>, napunjeno kopijom\u00a0<em>Dejli mirora<\/em>\u00a0pome\u0161anog sa za\u010dinima i sastojcima prema receptu za kobasice, Diter Rot, 1961\/.<\/p>\n<p>Materijalna komponenta je promenljiva. Koriste se materijali iz umetni\u010dkog i neumetni\u010dkog registra \/papir, drvo, glina, ko\u017ea, metal, tekstil, beton, staklo\u2026\/ Anselm Kifer, Luka Samaras, Ginter Ueker, Kiki Smit, Rej\u010del Vaitrid i\u00a0dr.\/. Oblik i veli\u010dina variraju<em>,\u00a0<\/em>zna\u010denjski okvir\u00a0je\u00a0kontekstualan.\u00a0<em>Knjiga umetnika<\/em>\u00a0poseduje plasti\u010dnost, izrazitu materijalnost, vibrantnost, \u010dulne vrednosti \/uo\u010dava se \u201edivlja taktilnost\u201c ruskih futuristi\u010dkih knjiga\/. Intervencije i eksperimentalni zahvati na materijalnom telu knjige\u00a0baziraju se na\u00a0tehnikama gra\u0111enja, konstruisanja, isecanja, restrukturiranja, dekomponovanja, lepljenja, kola\u017eiranja, bojenja, primeni grafi\u010dkih tehnika i sl.<\/p>\n<p>Sredinom 20. veka\u00a0<em>knjige umetnika<\/em>\u00a0postaju deo umetni\u010dkih zbirki muzeja \/MoMa, Viktorija i Albert muzej, Muzej Peci i mnogi drugi\/, izla\u017eu se na sajmovima umetni\u010dkih knjiga i sli\u010dnim manifestacijama. Kod nas internacionalna manifestacija PUNKT \/autora Nene Skoko\/, autorska izlo\u017eba posve\u0107ena knjizi umetnika, Vesne Pavi\u010devi\u0107 Laki\u0107evi\u0107, da pomenemo samo neke.<\/p>\n<p>Na drugoj strani javlja se zanimljiv fenomen: muzeji za jednu knjigu: Muzej nevinosti u Istanbulu, prema istoimenom romanu Orhana Pamuka, i muzej posve\u0107en\u00a0\u010cehovljevom delu\u00a0<em>Ostrvo Sahalin<\/em>, na Sahalinu. Oni materijalizuju sadr\u017eaje pojedina\u010dnih knjiga. Tako Muzej nevinosti u Istanbulu sadr\u017ei zbirke predmeta vezanih za \u017eivot glavne junakinje.<\/p>\n<p>Pojava kao \u0161to je uni\u0161tavanje knjiga iz religijskih, politi\u010dkih i moralnih razloga, kao ekstremni vid netolerancije prema Drugom i Razli\u010ditom, paljenjem knjiga i biblioteka, ide preko linije destrukcije od Asurbanipalove biblioteke, rasecanja jevan\u0111elja 1914. u crkvi u\u00a0Nemeniku\u0107ama\u00a0\/kod Mladenovca\/, spaljivanja knjiga 1933. u Berlinu, uni\u0161tenje Narodne biblioteke 1941. u Beogradu i nebrojenih primera destrukcije knjiga tokom cele istorije \u010dove\u010danstva. Film\u00a0<em>Farenhajt 451<\/em>\u00a0Fransoa Trifoa, po romanu Reja Bredberija, sna\u017ena metafora, na simboli\u010dan na\u010din govori o gu\u0161enju slobode misli u autoritarnim dru\u0161tvima, koje vatrom uklanjaju knjige.\u00a0\/Naziv filma se odnosi na temperaturu na kojoj je autor smatrao da papir po\u010dinje da gori, 451 stepen Farenhajtove skale.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><br Istovremeno, otvara se pitanje \u0161ta sve knjiga mo\u017ee da bude, odnosno \u0161ta sve mo\u017ee da predstavlja knjigu.<\/p>\n<p>Samo mali broj eksponata iz MUZEJ-a KNJIGE\u00a0I PUTOVANJA (treba ga posetiti i uveriti se u svu njegovu kompletnost, bogatstvo i lepotu)predstavlja najrazli\u010ditije forme knjiga, specifi\u010dnih karakteristika, nagla\u0161ene materijalnosti i plasti\u010dnosti, a one uklju\u010duju kulturne, dru\u0161tvene i tehni\u010dke procese koji ih oblikuju. Materijali od kojih su na\u010dinjene karakteristi\u010dni su za podneblje u kome su nastale, \u010desto organskog porekla: palmino li\u0161\u0107e, ko\u017ea \u017eivotinja, kosti, drvo i sl. Miris kao jedan od na\u010dina detektovanja starosti knjige daje im posebnost.<\/p>\n<p>Drugu celinu izlo\u017ebe \u010dine\u00a0<em>knjige umetnika<\/em>\u00a0iz zbirke MUZEJ-a ZEPTER. Tematski raspon obuhvata interpretaciju biblioteke kao metafore pam\u0107enja i se\u0107anja, transpozicije svitka u skulpturalne celine, re\u010di i slova\u00a0inkorporirane u materiju slike,
